In Nice there are two places of worship called the Visitation Chapel and, as if to trouble newcomers even more, they are both located in Vieux Nice. The Visitation Chapel we speak of here is the one which is also referred to as the Providence Chapel. The other one is known as the Visitation Chapel of Saint Claire.

The Providence Chapel was built in the 16th century as part of a larger monastic complex, and it was successively inhabited and looked after by three different orders of nuns. In the early 19th century, it started to grow as an orphanage where young girls would be brought up and taught basic knowledge related to religion and morals.

At present, the chapel and some adjoining structures are all that is left of the original monastic complex, and they are the headquarters of the so-called Centre Culturel de la Providence.
