People who want to discover Nice and its surroundings at a glimpse should definitely visit the so-called Theatre de la Photographie et de l’Image Charles Negre, which is located in the very center of the city, in a majestic building which has managed to preserve much of the charm of the Belle Époque period when it was built. The venue can easily be classified as a museum of photography, since its mission is to unveil Nice and the neighboring areas by means of the photographic art.
Indeed, vast collections of pictures gathered as a result of an extensive documentation work depict Nice as it used to look like in the past. However, the museum does not focus exclusively on preserving the past image of Nice, since one of its main tasks is to keep posted with the contemporary evolution of the city in terms of urban planning and industrial activity, and to capture the essentials of these fields by means of the photographic art.
The diachronic picture of Nice offered by the museum is complemented by the sundry activities the institution is involved in: temporary exhibitions featuring the works of worldwide famed photographers, organization of the so-called Septembre de la Photo, instructional and educational activities for students of photography.
